Format For Minutes of Meeting

March 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

In the company I work for, organization is paramount. We have forms for everything and everything, and they are usually efficiently designed so as to contain a maximum amount of information with a minimum amount of fuss. Our invoices, payment records, tax records, and personnel records are all flawlessly organized. That is why I was so surprised when I actually looked at our meeting notes. Apparently we had never come up with a standard format for minutes of meetings. Everything was in complete disarray.

Design Company

When I was going to school, I was often jealous of the liberal arts kids. It seemed like such a fun way to get through college. My parents insisted that, if they were going to help me pay for college, I had to get a degree in something practical. I started out in mathematics, then moved to engineering. After doing a little bit of that, I switched to graphic design. My dad was proud of me. It was a really practical approach to education and, with a science classes I had already taken, I also had a concrete understanding of the way physics worked. That was very important to my father. He believed strongly in the hard sciences, and thought his kids should too.

Paging Systems

March 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

I hate to admit it, but I yell more than I would like to. I don’t like it because I have always thought yelling is very unladylike. However, there are moments when there is just no way around it. If you have ever been cooking dinner with a child attached to one leg, and the phone glued to your ear, only to have someone knock on the door, you might now what I mean. You may have to yell for someone else in the house to get the door, or perhaps cart you away to the loony bin. When these moments happen, I dream of having some sort of paging systems in my home.

Criminal Background Checks

March 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

I used to absolutely hate doing criminal background checks. Although I run a business, I basically believe that my employees have a right to their privacy. Although I would sometimes have to check criminal records for insurance purposes, I would avoid it whenever I could. Then one day, I hired an ex-felon without knowing it. On the surface, he seemed really nice. Looking back in retrospect, maybe he was too nice. He knew just how to charm everyone, and said the perfect thing in every situation. At first, everything was going smoothly. The customers loved him, and most of his coworkers got along with him very well. Then stuff started to go missing. I initially suspected another worker, someone who I knew was facing eviction and desperate for money. I had almost fired her, but then the hidden camera finally picked up a shot of him stealing money from the drawer. He had been too smooth for me to catch him up to that point, but finally I caught him. If I had done a criminal background check to begin with, it would have saved me a lot of time, money, and inconvenience, and stopped me from suspecting an innocent woman to boot! I could have done a cheap criminal background check as a matter of course. A lot of other people in my business do it, and it has become standard practice in quite a few industries. Nonetheless, I decided to trust my gut instincts instead of doing a search. I used to think of myself as a very good judge of character, but my judgment seems to have let me down. Nowadays, I always do a criminal background check before I hire someone. As soon as I fired that guy, as a matter of fact, the first thing that I did was to research companies that did criminal check searches. Apparently, they are not all the same. Most of them have records from every state, but not all of them have good nationwide records as well, not to mention access to law enforcement in other countries. Essentially, the more information you can get in your criminal background check, the better. If you don’t use the best service, you might get incomplete info, and that can lead to you not finding out if someone has been convicted. Trust me, it is worth paying a bit more money to get the best service.

March 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Normally, there is one person in an office that is responsible for purchasing all of the office products. In larger companies, there may be several people, one in each department. They might know the specific needs of those particular people, and that means there are various orders going out all of the time. Even those who work from home need to have some organization when they order what they need. Most don’t realize it, but unorganized ordering of supplies can mean losses that are not necessary.

Office Filing Systems

March 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Office storage is one of the most important and most frequently neglected aspects of good business management. Whether your office filing systems are based on simple vertical filing cabinets, a sophisticated computer backup network, or rows and rows of stackable storage shelves, it forms the heart of your business. Having well-run office filing system means that your employees can find what they need when they need it. Little time is wasted in looking for information or products, making for an efficient and well-organized business. Bad office filing systems, on the other hand, invite disaster. Not only can you potentially waste hundreds of man-hours a year, but you can also lose valuable information and products.
